Scan, 1996

Defining the employee entrance plaza of Culver Studios Office Building, Culver City, CA, Scan is composed of two separate elements that both reflect and compliment each other and reference to aspects in the evolution of the medium of television. The two elements are subtitled Nipkow Disk and 525 Scan. Nipkow Disk is composed of 27 light figures set in 27 individual stone pavers that form in turn set into a concrete circular plaza. THe lights race, blink and jump in a determined, albeit seemingly random, pattern. This work, in form, references the spinning spiral disk of early image scanners. Adjacent to the disk is a long high backed circular bench. 525 Scan, a 60” x 144” stainless steel plate, is set onto the back of the bench. The plate is etched and black enamel infill with 525 scan lines and the names of 327 people contributing to the development of the medium of television; the workers and the vision. The entire area speaks to scanning, recording, transmission and reception as they evolved from a mechanical era vision to an electronic age reality.
